THE ZEOLITE DEPOSIT

Based on the MGB published Geologic Map of the area, the zeolite and bentonite deposits presently being mined by SAILE Industries in Barangay Malabobo, Mangatarem, Pangasinan belong to the Aksitero Formation and most probably extend to the finer members of the overlying Moriones Formation. The well bedded tuffaceous members of the formations has been transformed massively into zeolite/mordenite authigenically after deposition such that the deposit occur in the area extensively.

What is presently being mined is the fine grained tuffaceous shales and siltstone bed members of the formation exposed about 15 meters thick in the mining area. Individual beds range in thickness from a few centimeters to several meters. The color range from light cream, beige, dirty white, mocha to brownish and greenish. Texture resembles closely a tuff but sometimes exhibit finer grains. Silty and graded beds of zeolite do occur.

X-ray diffraction analysis done by Industrial Technology Development Institute and the Bureau of Soils and Water Management reveal that the mineral name is mordenite (Sodium Potassium Calcium Aluminum Silicate Hydrate) with a general formula (Na 2 CaK 2 )Al 2 Si 10 O 24 .7H 2 O. Laboratory chemical analysis done by the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau show in Table 1 the following chemical properties:
